The Mexican auteur and winner of Best Director at Cannes, Amat Escalante's first foray into the fantastical genre delivers a story enthralled with social realism and weird sci-fi eroticism. Set in a small Mexican town, The Untamed explores abusive relationships, social values, the taboos of addictions, homophobia with a pinch of the unkown. To tackle The Untamed's photography, Escalante enlisted Lars von Trier's frequent collaborator, Manuel Alberto Claro (Melancholia, Nymphomaniac, and The House that Jack Built).
The provincial life of a family is upset with the arrival of mysterious Veronica. Sex and love can be fragile in certain regions where strong family values, hypocrisy, homophobia, and male chauvinism exist. Veronica convinces them that in the nearby woods, inside an isolated cabin, dwells something not of this world that could be the answer to all of their problems. Something whose force they cannot resist and with whom they must make peace or suffer its wrath.
