This week's pick is Veit Helmer's first feature, Tuvalu (1999), starring Denis Lavant and Chulpan Khamatova.

Confusing yet charming, watching Tuvalu feels like you are stepping into a dreamworld populated by weird though moving characters: a blind lifeguard, a counter woman that accepts buttons instead of cash, their odd son and his crush to name a few. The discolored photography, the strange landscape, the lack of dialogues, the decrepit bath house, everything contributes to the uniqueness of this film that is more felt than understood. Big plus: Denis Levant is in it. — Tonino di Dio
