Rainer Sarnet
Based on the well-known Estonian bestseller, Rehepapp by Andrus Kivirähk (2000), Rainer Sarnet’s feature film is a fairy tale about unrequited love. In a poor Estonian village, a group of peasants use magic and folk remedies to survive the winter, and a young woman tries to get a young man to love her.
“A gorgeously shot, deeply strange, hugely atmospheric black-and-white trip through a tale of magic and malice in folkloric rural Estonia.” Variety
“the forest is alive with werewolves and the ghosts of the dead, their antics adding a Monty Pythonesque lunacy that amuses and appalls in equal measure.” New York Times
