Atletico Pabarile, the worst team of the Sardinian third league, is humbled like every year by Montecrastu, the team led by Brai (Alessio Di Clemente), an arrogant fazendero who is used to vexing Atletico’s peones because he is the owner of the lands. The return to town of young Matzutzi, who had emigrated, upsets the balance of the championship and Atletico Pabarile starts winning a match after the other, thanks to the endeavours of its new undisputed champion. The story of the two teams intertwines with the professional climb of Cruciani, an ambitious referee at the highest international level, as well as with the sublot in which two cousins playing for Montecrastu are involved in a feud linked to the archaic codes of sheep breeding. Matzutzi succeeds in winning Miranda, the daughter of the blind trainer Prospero, while Cruciani gets involved in a corruption which will bring him down the gutter: he is in fact caught red-handed and sentenced to be exiled to the hell of the Sardinian third league.
